What the Law Requires

Regulations require new bus drivers to undergo a certain amount of training that will prepare them to pass four tests as part of the Driver CPC regimen. Only when a candidate can prove his or her skill, competency, and proficiency will a Category D licence be awarded. Along with that licence, the new driver is given a CPC qualification card good for five calendar years. Drivers must receive an additional 35 hours of CPC training to renew the card for the next five-year cycle.

However, theory training goes above and beyond that initial test. • Competency and Proficiency – Lastly, CPC requirements demand that coach drivers are competent and proficient in what they do. Testing is included to measure both. The law does not stipulate how long a training course must take. That’s good for us because it allows us to take full advantage of our intensive and concentrated training approach. As long as our students have the knowledge and skill to prove they can drive a coach safely and competently, they should not be held back by an arbitrary time restriction set by the government. Thankfully, they are not.

The first method is to utilise a small number of courses containing a lot of information that is taught over longer periods of time. The other approach, which is the one we use, breaks down the entire body of knowledge into small, bite-size chunks of information that can be learned quickly. Between each information burst, students have time to step back and take stock of what they have learned.
