We teach individual principles and concepts, building one on top of another in quick succession. CPC Testing Overview

Since 2008, commercial driving licences in the UK have been governed by the Driver CPC mandates originally developed and adopted by the European Union. Our standards are slightly different compared to the EU standards, but they are comparable nonetheless. There are four tests required by the mandate. These are:

• Theory Test – The HGV theory test is the first of four that students must take. It is a two-part test that can be taken in multiple sessions or during a single sitting. In either case, both parts of the test must be passed within two years of each other in order to remain valid. A driver who fails one or both parts of the test can a retest beginning three days from the previous attempt.
• Case Studies Test – The second test in the series is the case studies test. It is designed to gauge a candidate’s knowledge of real-world scenarios that he or she is likely to experience in the workplace. Examiners want to know how candidates would react in such situations.
• Driving Skills Test – All commercial drivers must have both the knowledge and physical ability to safely manoeuvre large commercial vehicles. Therefore, driving skills are tested at the conclusion of training. The driving skills test is a two-part test that involves driving on public roads and a closed course. The first part is conducted with an examiner in the vehicle; the second part involves solo driving.
• Practical Demonstration Test – The fourth and final test required by the CPC mandate is the practical demonstration test. Candidates are asked five questions taken directly from the Driver CPC syllabus. They must be answered using the ‘show me, tell me’ format. We train our students how to take this test correctly.

Future drivers should note that practical skills training cannot begin until the driver takes and passes the theory test. The test is preceded by obtaining a provisional entitlement and undergoing a routine medical exam. The case studies test can technically be taken at any point during your training. However, we have a designated spot within our training programme where we prefer to book this test. Maintaining a schedule in this regard just makes training easier and more structured. As for the final two tests, they cannot be taken until you complete practical skills training.
