Each case study is accompanied by a number of multiple-choice questions that measure the candidate’s understanding of the topic. A passing mark on this test is 40 out of 50.
• Driving Skills Test – The third test is the driving skills test, taken once a candidate has completed practical skills training. It is also a two-part test that involves driving on public roads with an examiner, followed by solo driving at the testing facility. Candidates must demonstrate they possess the skills and knowledge to safely manoeuvre large commercial vehicles.
• Practical Demonstration Test – The fourth and final test in the series is the practical demonstration test. It is usually taken during the same session as the driving skills test. This test involves five topics taken directly from the Driver CPC syllabus. It is a ‘show me, tell me’ test requiring a score of 80 out of 100 to pass.

We Train to the Tests

• Driving Theory – There is quite a bit of book knowledge involved in driving commercial vehicles. Students learn about things like drivers’ hours regulations, how to maintain legally compliant paperwork, how weather conditions affect vehicle handling, and so forth.
• Driving Skills – Drivers must possess certain skills in order to pass the driving skills test. This includes proper accelerating techniques, making safe, controlled stops, cornering (especially at junctions), and reversing trailers into parking spaces. We teach these skills and give our students plenty of opportunity to practice.
• Practical Skills – Along with driving skills, professionals must possess additional practical skills. These skills include things such as conducting walkaround checks, properly securing cargo, and mitigating illegal migration where applicable.

By imparting the required knowledge and skill sets, we prepare students for the ‘what’ portion of testing. Then we go one step further. We also teach them how to take tests utilising strategies that will increase their chances of passing on the first attempt. We can use that HGV theory test as a good example.

The theory test is a two-part test involving both multiple-choice questions and computer-based videos. There are particular strategies for taking multiple-choice tests we teach our students. For example, the theory exam may ask the same question, phrased three or four different ways, to measure whether a candidate truly understands the material. We teach our students how to read and interpret questions so that they always know what it is they are being asked.

As for the video portion of the test, candidates are measured on their ability to correctly spot developing hazards in a reasonable amount of time. The test involves using a touchscreen to record the candidates’ responses. For someone who has never taken this kind of test before, it can be somewhat intimidating. Therefore, we give our students opportunities to take practice tests so that they can become comfortable with the process before they have to sit for the real thing.
