Here at the HGV Training Centre, we have the privilege of sending hundreds of drivers through our training programmes every month. Most of them come to us hoping to learn how to drive a lorry or bus. All of them, regardless of the licence category they are after, must first pass the PCV or LGV theory test.
Both tests are very similar in terms of content and structure. For the purposes of this post, we will refer only to the LGV test. Rest assured that what applies to this test also applies to its PCV counterpart.
The LGV theory test is a two-part test taken on a computer. You can schedule both parts for the same session or take them independently of one another. But in order for the results to be valid, you must pass both portions of the test within two years. For simplicity’s sake, we recommend both parts be taken during the same session.
With that said, here are three tips you can use to prepare for the LGV theory test:
The first part of the test involves 100 multiple-choice questions covering general highway safety as it relates to driving commercial vehicles. The government provides a manual that you can study in preparation for the test. Our first tip is simple: study the literature every single day. Do not wait until the night before your test to open the manual for the first time. Doing so is a great way to fail.
Spending 20 to 30 minutes per day studying for the test will increase your chances of passing. And given that it takes about ten days for your provisional entitlement to arrive in the post, you will have plenty of time to study before the exam.
There are numerous websites all across the internet, including the GOV.UK website, from which you can find links to free practice tests. These practice tests are based on real tests from past years. Taking advantage of them exposes you to what the real testing environment will be like without all the pressure that goes along with it. You can take as many practice tests as you like.
All of our students receive a software package that includes practice tests. We provide it free of charge. Practice at home on your computer or using a mobile app with your smartphone or tablet. Practice as much as you can.
We routinely work with students who say they would just feel better about the LGV theory test if they were able to take a preparation class. Fortunately, we offer such a class. You can study for the test by yourself or enhance your study by taking the class at any one of our facilities.
The better prepared you are for the LGVs theory test, the more likely you will pass on the first try. So do yourself a favour and be prepared.
