Take Advantage of Extended Caravan Club Openings

Several caravan club sites have recently announced that they will remain open later into the winter in order to allow guests to take advantage of some upcoming special events. Coniston Park Coppice will remain open until 11 November, while Poolsbrook Country Park and Stonehaven Queen Elizabeth Park will be accepting guests into early January.

The extended openings offer caravanners unable to get away this summer the opportunity to enjoy autumn and winter dates at a park of their choosing. However, in order to do so, a towing licence may be necessary.

In the UK, currently licensed drivers can tow a trailer weighing no more than 750 kg without the need for special towing licence. If your caravan weighs in excess of 750 kg, and it likely does, you will need at least a B+E licence. A higher grade licence may be required depending on your tow vehicle and the size of your caravan.

The good news is that obtaining your towing licence is not difficult at all. It simply requires applying for a provisional entitlement, completing your training, and passing your practical skills test. The entire process is something the HGV Training Centre is more than happy to help you with.

How the Process Works

Should you decide to pursue a towing licence, the first step is to contact the HGV Training Centre. We have facilities all across the UK, making it likely there is one near you. Once you are enrolled in one of our classes, your training can begin.

It’s important to note that there is no theory test involved here. Why? Because you already passed the theory test when you earned your car licence. There’s no need to cover information you have already shown proficiency with.

Practical skills training involves both time in the classroom and behind the wheel. We will prepare you by teaching you how to hook and unhook your trailer, how to check couplings and lights, and how to successfully handle your trailer on the road. These are all things you will be tested on.

When you complete your practical skills training, you can sign up to take your test. The HGV Training Centre does not provide testing, but we will send one of our instructors with you to the test site. Over the years, this has proved to be a successful strategy allowing our students to feel at ease at test time. Because they are relaxed, they are more likely to pass.
