Coal Workers Pursuing New Careers through HGV Training

The closing of several prominent collieries in Scotland has left hundreds of workers unemployed and with no real prospects. Fortunately, some of them are taking advantage of HGV training to begin a new career behind the wheel. According to the Cumnock Chronicle, potential new drivers are receiving assistance through a number of agencies working together on their behalf.

The Chronicle specifically names Skills Development Scotland and JobCentre Plus as just two of the organisations working with East Ayrshire Council to get displaced coal workers back to work. The free training provided by the council has already helped a number of former coal workers begin new careers.

The training is of benefit to both displaced workers and the haulage and transport industries as a whole. As you may already know, the UK is currently in the midst of a professional driver shortage; a shortage that will likely only get worse in the future as drivers retire or move to other trades.

Part of that shortage is due to the new requirements forcing current HGV drivers to receive CPC training by next year. The cost of that training is causing some older drivers to consider retirement if they are already close to pension age. As for the new drivers training in Scotland, the CPC requirements are already included so they do not bear any additional expense.

Hopefully, displaced coal workers all over Scotland will take advantage of the opportunity to become HGV drivers.
