HGV drivers are rarely the victims of crime but, on the few occasions when they are, it can take the form of petrol theft. The fuel in an HGV is sometimes as financially valuable as the HGV’s actual cargo, and it’s almost always easier to reach when the vehicle is left unattended – if the thief knows what they’re doing. Stopping in unsecured spots overnight, or leaving the vehicle for a break, has always carried the small risk that a fuel thief could find their way into the fuel tank and syphon off some of the HGV’s most precious cargo, leaving drivers to clear up the resulting problems.
Fuel theft is sadly becoming more common. Just last month, Cheshire police had to warn all HGV drivers to take extra care when parking, after a series of fuel thefts hit drivers who had parked up in lay-bys along the A55 in Chester. A number of different alarms and devices have been created to try to prevent these kinds of thefts, but now a new and seemingly very effective one has hit the market and snapped up a very big initial client.
The Co-op Group took measures to protect their fleet of HGVs from petrol theft and spillage by installing a brand new device which blocks all access to the truck’s fuel. The Co-op Group is the first company in the country to install the Impregnable-HF device. This clever protective device by Tiss locks off the fuel as soon as it reaches the top of the tank, using a clever locking valve which floats on the surface of the fuel.
With the Impregnable-HF device acting as a barrier between the opening of the tank and the fuel inside it, skimming or syphoning the fuel becomes absolutely impossible. Not only does it prevent fuel theft, but it also stops accidental spillage and overfilling, thanks to its protective layer of defence within the tank.
