Make Sure Drivers Are Prepared with Corporate Driver Training

The Institute of Advanced Motorists says 2015 has seen some of the most significant changes to driving regulations in decades. It also says that far too many drivers are unprepared to deal with the changes – both those changes that have already been implemented and those scheduled for implementation in the future. Their warning is enough for us to recommend our clients make sure their drivers are prepared with corporate driver training.

The three most significant changes affecting commercial drivers this year are:

• Paper Driving Licence Elimination – The elimination of the paper driving licence counterpart radically changes how employers and workers exchange relevant licence information. The paper counterpart was a document that contained information about traffic violations, licence endorsements, etc. Now that information can only be obtained online.

• Speed Limits – Maximum speed limits for HGVs were increased this past April. HGVs travelling on single lane A roads in England and Wales can now travel 50 mph as opposed to the former speed of 40 mph. Dual carriageway and motorway speeds have been raised from 50 mph to 60 mph.

• Drug Driving – In March, the government passed sweeping new rules to clamp down on drug driving. Included in the new rules was the expansion of the list of drugs that could not be used without being considered under the influence. Authorities have already made more than 900 drug-driving arrests since the rules went into effect.

It is clear the government is reworking the driving regulations from top to bottom. It is incumbent upon company owners and fleet managers to keep pace with the changes and, when necessary, make sure their drivers know how the regulations affect them. Corporate driver training is one way to accomplish both goals.
