New HGV Road Tax Closer to Becoming Reality

A new road tax on HGV drivers is one step closer to becoming a reality thanks to the granting of an operational contract. Northgate Public Services won the contract to implement the system and collect the tax from foreign drivers who operate in the UK. The new tax is seen by many as a great benefit to the UK haulage industry.

For years, foreign haulage companies have taken advantage of the lower cost of doing business in the UK. It has been suggested these foreign companies have put many UK HGV drivers and their employers out of business. The new tax aims to level the playing field in an attempt to help UK companies be more competitive.

The tax is scheduled to take effect in April of next year, according to Mancunian Matters. In the meantime, Northgate Public Services is developing an online payment system designed to make it as easy as possible for foreigners to pay the tax. In addition, a database will be developed to keep track of HGV drivers who do not comply with the levy. The database will aid enforcement efforts.

Transport minister Stephen Hammond says the payment system set up by Northgate is critical to making sure that tax is correctly levied and collected. If the company fails to create a reliable and accurate system, the whole thing could be for nothing. That’s not likely to happen, however.
