A series of high-level meetings between haulage industry representatives and government leaders in recent weeks led many to believe that Chancellor George Osborne would be offering substantial relief for HGV training costs as part of this year’s budget. That confidence has since been dashed by what appears to be a lukewarm offering from Osborne.
The Chancellor’s recent remarks indicated that the Government would be looking at ways to speed up HGV licencing and medical assessments in order to help the haulage industry get more drivers working faster. Osborne also said the Government would be looking at access and funding issues to see if anything can be done to get more students into HGV training. Unfortunately, Osborne’s statements were very light on details.
As you might imagine, the haulage industry is not at all impressed with Osborne’s remarks. Industry leaders are looking for hard-line commitments to answering the question of HGV training costs in the UK. Until those costs are dealt with, the industry fears the driver shortage now entrenched throughout the UK will only continue. New drivers need a way to access training that they can afford.
On the one hand, it is understandable that the Government would be unwilling to commit to anything substantial in an election year. On the other hand, any commitment to address HGV training could be popular with blue-collar voters. Perhaps Osborne is risking his standing by being a bit too cautious. We will have to wait and see. In the meantime, both the haulage industry and training sector have to continue looking for new ways to get students into training.
