The PCV theory test that new drivers are required to take prior to beginning driver training covers a lot of ground. It is a two-part, 100-question exam designed to test the student’s knowledge of general road safety and hazard avoidance. Yet despite its comprehensive nature, we doubt there are any questions directly dealing with a 140-point turn. And why would it? It is not every day a bus driver is forced to make such a manoeuvre.

Unfortunately, a Norwich bus driver was one of the rare professionals forced to engage in a long, laborious 140-point turn after finding himself stranded on a narrow street. The Telegraph reports that the First driver mistakenly turned onto Magdalen Street after reading a sign that said ‘no access for any vehicles except buses’. It wasn’t long before he realised there was no way out other than turning the bus around and going back the same way he came in.

The Telegraph posted a video on its website of the driver’s valiant effort, which, by any measure, was rather impressive. He skilfully forwarded and backed the double-decker bus with a delicate precision worthy of admiration. After what seemed a lifetime, the driver got the vehicle turned around without damaging the buildings on either side of the street. We assume he will never make that same mistake again.

Skilful, Precision Driving

We must admit to being inspired after seeing the video posted by The Telegraph. The driver’s patient and skill are a testament to both his training and his own natural abilities as a PCV driver. It is also a reminder to the general public that professional driving requires skill and precision, especially when such large vehicles are involved. Not everyone has the ability to do what this First driver did.

At the HGV Training Centre, we do our best to produce drivers that are just as skilful and precise. We train our students in all the finer points of manoeuvring large commercial vehicles in tight spaces. We also teach them about road safety and legal compliance. By the time our students graduate, they are more than ready to earn their licences before going on to be competent professionals.

If you are interested in a career as a professional bus driver, the HGV Training Centre can help you prepare for the PCV theory test prior to beginning your practical skills training with us. You will be happy to know that our students pass the theory test, the first time, at a rate of 92%. We would be happy to help you prepare as well.

Of course, you do not need the theory test preparation class if you are already confident that you can pass the test on your own. At any rate, a passing grade allows you to begin practical skills training that include time in the classroom and behind the wheel. The HGV Training Centre is ready to get you started. We can have you trained and looking for work in a matter of weeks.
