Rituals Can Help Calm Nerves for Driving Test

Every summer brings an increase in the number of people taking the car and trailer test for caravan purposes. And of course, there are the normal stream of drivers taking tests for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Yet regardless of the type of vehicle and test in question, all of these drivers have one thing in common: nerves. Fortunately, according to BT.com, many drivers participate in some sort of ritual that calms the nerves in the hours leading up to a road test.

BT.com’s July 7 story listed a number of interesting rituals, including the following:

• Chocolate – One particular family utilises a specific brand of chocolate whenever a family member takes a driving test. The ritual started when the family matriarch gave her husband chocolate on the day of his HGV test. He passed. Since then, each successive driver taking a test will consume that same brand of chocolate.

• Cracking Eggs – A young student purchased a new car prior to taking her driving test. In anticipation of the test, her mother cracked an egg on each tyre and gave her daughter an ‘evil eye’ to defend against jealousy and envy.

• Lucky T-Shirt – Another student had a lucky T-shirt he wore for all of his school exams. He never took an exam without it, and he wasn’t about to take his driving test without it, either.

Although each of the students listed in the BT.com report passed their tests after practising their rituals, it is probably safe to say that the rituals themselves did not make them better drivers. Instead, the rituals calmed nerves and enabled them to relax and concentrate. Almost all of us will do better when we are feeling relaxed.
