Scotland Secures £175 Million for Motorway Work

Drivers who routinely travel between Glasgow and Edinburgh might be pleased to know the Scottish government has secured £175 million to upgrade the M8 motorway between Scotland’s two biggest cities. The money comes by way of loans secured from the European Investment Bank, the oldest such lending institution on the European continent. Money will also be spent on improvements to the M73 and M74.

In reporting on the announcement, HGV UK says that commercial drivers will benefit once the project is complete through less congestion and journeys that are both quicker and safer. Right now, the traffic problems associated with the motorways in and around Edinburgh and Glasgow make life miserable for HGV drivers.

Upon completion of a concession agreement to be awarded by the Scottish government, design and implementation of the project will get underway. Officials have said it will create hundreds of construction-related jobs, as well as permanent jobs needed to maintain the roads for the next 30 years.

Since 2012, the European Investment Bank has increased the amount of money put into UK infrastructure by 59%. However, it should be noted that the money provided for this project does not meet the total funding needs it represents. It’s only half of what officials believe will be required, the other half being secured through bonds purchased by international investors.

Better Roads Equals Better Transport
