The age of natural gas-powered LGVs could be almost upon us, as Volvo unveil their latest energy-efficient lorry. Volvo’s latest Euro 6-compliant LGVs are powered entirely by natural gas – otherwise known as biogas – and they could be the future of green road haulage. In fact, the trucks could be a miraculous environment-saving solution, able to save up to 100% of CO2 emissions.
With such incredible savings on harmful pollution, Volvo is at the cutting edge of the new LGV technology which is promising to save the environment at the same time as it improves road haulage services. LGVs are responsible for a large amount of pollution on the road because of their size and the long miles they do, so companies are investing heavily in reducing their environmental impact in a number of ways. This is largely in anticipation of crackdowns on vehicle emissions around the world, with governments committing to serious cuts to their harmful emissions outputs, passing on the responsibility to vehicle manufacturers.
Electric LGVs have been on the cards for some time, and semi-automated trucks can travel close together in convoys which make use of slipstreams to reduce fuel consumption as well as emissions. But biogas is another way that savings can be made. In its liquid form, it can be used to power vehicles of all sizes and is thought to be the solution to long-haul journeys where electric vehicles are better suited to shorter distances and more local journeys.
The trucks to look out for are the Volvo LHG and Volvo FM LNG. Both are capable of running on natural gas or biogas, both of which are significantly better for the environment than diesel fuel. And in the process, the vehicles also use much less fuel – just three-quarters of the fuel they would use if they were running on diesel.
