A lot of work has been done over the past few years to address the shortfall in available HGV drivers in the UK, resulting in there being 24% of companies having vacancies (down from 41% in 2021), but a lot remains to be done. So, yes, it looks very much like there will still be a shortage in 2025, meaning that there will still be a huge demand for qualified drivers.
In this article, we look at the forces at play that make HGV training a wise career move and why those with the skills are not likely to be short of job offers now and in the future.
While things have improved since 2021 in terms of HGV driver numbers, the industry is far from being out of the woods. A number of factors continue to make further progress challenging, such as testing/licensing delays and the impact of Brexit. Numbers fluctuate, too, as the 24% figure we quoted above, is actually up from 19% at the end of 2023.
More than 55% of UK HGV drivers are aged between 50 and 65, which means that many are choosing to retire. As such, logistics companies across the country urgently need drivers to fill these gaps, so there’s a wealth of opportunities for fresh talent to enter the industry and carve out a secure and well-paid career for themselves.
While technology has moved on a lot in the transport industry in recent years, lorry drivers still represent the backbone of the supply chain. It’s not just their driving skills that make them so sought after either, as their decision-making, problem-solving and adaptability ensure that goods get where they’re going safely and on time.
The growth of e-commerce continues to reshape the way consumers buy their goods and demand for fast and reliable deliveries has skyrocketed. Again HGV drivers play a vital role in making all of this possible, particularly as more and more customers see rapid overnight and same-day deliveries become the norm.
