A 19-year-old man from Mansfield recently became one of the youngest people to earn an HGV licence in the UK. Anthony Parkes, who works for Freelance UK, earned his licence after spending three years in an apprenticeship programme through his employer. He is proof that you are never too young for HGV training … almost. You must be at least 18 according to the law. After that, you are free to pursue your Class 1 one licence.
Parkes has been routinely exposed to the trucking industry ever since he started joining his father at work at age 8. When he turned 16, Freelance UK enrolled him in a mechanical apprenticeship until he was old enough to begin his HGV training. He is now fully licenced and prepared to drive the company’s brand-new £90,000 Renault T.
When asked about Parkes’ training, Freelance UK director Holly Porter emphasised her company’s belief that training a younger generation of drivers is necessary for survival. She acknowledged that only about 2% of the industry’s truck drivers are under the age of 25, creating the need for Freelance UK to invest in preparing young people for the haulage industry. Without more younger drivers to replace those scheduled to retire in the next few years, the haulage and transport industries could be left in bad shape.
As Freelance UK sees it, an investment in young people today is an investment in the future of their business. They believe young drivers have a lot to offer, so much so that they are willing to put their own money and resources into training them for driver positions. What they spend on training now will ultimately pay off with greater revenues down the road.
We have no first-hand knowledge of how Freelance UK trains young drivers. However, we can tell you that the HGV Training Centre utilises a fast-paced and focused approach that can have you trained and ready to take your practical skills test in a matter of weeks. There is no need to spend 4 to 6 months preparing to be a professional driver when you can complete your HGV training with us much more quickly.
Please understand that we do not cut corners in our training just to speed up the process. Rather, we do not waste our students’ time by teaching them things they do not need to know. We focus squarely on the skills and knowledge necessary to pass both the theory and practical skills tests as required by law. And our approach works. Approximately 92% of our students pass the theory test the first time.
If you would like to follow Anthony Parkes’ example, we encourage you to contact us at the HGV Training Centre. We provide HGV training at more than 45 facilities around the UK. Our classes are affordable, convenient and just what you need to earn your licence as a professional driver. New classes are forming on a regular basis, so don’t wait to get started.
